On 24, January 2010, Eritreans residing in Norway gathered on Plaza Hotel in Oslo to discuss the unjust sanction imposed on Eritrea by UNSC under resolution 1907 (2009).
Delegates from Trondheim, Stavanger, Kristiansand and Bergen were among the more than 300 participants who deliberated the resolution. Chairman of Hizbawi mekete Oslo Mr. Yemane Haile gave a brief description about the content of the meeting and later on invited the distinguished and intellect Professor Gideon Abay Asmerom to elaborate the subject matter of the sanction cases.
Eritreans in San Jose conducted monthly Hizbawi Mekete forum on Saturday January 16, 2010 and thoroughly discussed the shameful and unjust UN Security Council sanctions Resolution 1907, which was adopted on December 23 2009.
In rejecting the unjust UN sanction, and at the same time, recognizing the tremendous developments that Eritrean people undergoing, the participants endorsed the following resolutions:
The UN Security Council passed a resolution imposing sanctions on Eritrea on the 23rd of December 2009, with full support from the British government, for allegedly providing financial support to the Somali insurgents and in relation with the conflict with Djibouti. The sanctions include an arms embargo, travel bans and asset freezes. No evidence has been presented to substantiate the accusations. The British government has classified the evidence it claimed it has and would not disclose it to our community representatives or anyone else for that matter.
The UN Security Council has imposed sanctions against
Eritrea that include an arms embargo, asset freezes and a
travel ban, all based on an unfounded allegation that
Eritrea is supporting extremists in Somalia. Eritrea’s
consistent stand is against all forms of extremism in the
region. This is a reckless move without any foundation.
Eritrea, itself a victim of Terrorism and at the forefront in
fighting international terrorism, surely doesn’t deserve
this sanctions. Even the thought of it is offensive!
