CT4TPJE leaves its last stop in Deutschland, Villingen-Schwenningen for Zurich
The Cycling Tour for Truth, Peace, Justice and Eritrea spent its last night in Germany at Villingen-Schwenningen. While there it presented its memorandum calling for peace to authorities of the twin cities. On their way to Villingen-Schwenningen from Stuttgart, they had stopped at Tübingen to present their memorandum to the authorities of the city as well. They have now started their 100 km bike to Zurich, Switzerland. They will ride for three more days in Switzerland and finish in Geneva at the UN headquarters on Monday 13 April.
April 13 will be the 13th anniversary of the final and binding delimitation decision of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission (EEBC). This commission was established on the basis of the Algiers Agreement that was signed by Eritrea's and Ethiopia's leaders and the UN, EU, AU and US had also signed the Agreement as guarantors and witnesses. It is the only authority that had the mandate to delimit and demarcate the border and it did this with unanimous decisions in 2002 and 2007.
Unfortunately, toeing the US line, none of the guarantors and witnesses of Algiers Agreement have said a word in the face of Ethiopia's blatant disregard for international law and refusal to abide by its treaty obligation. Quite to the contrary, the EU is financing Ethiopia's war mongering, the US is providing the diplomatic cover and protection needed at the Security Council, the UN is used as a tool, as before, to deny the people of Eritrea their legitimate right to peace and development. As for the African Union let's not even go there. This organization, for all practical purposes, acts and behaves as if it is an extension of the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. To this very day, this African organization, hasn't uttered a single sentence, not even one word, that reminds or calls on Ethiopia to abide by the Algiers Agreement, an Agreement that supposedly was drafted under the auspices of the African Union. There is not greater violation of a human right than this silence in the face of the violations of a people's right. Ethiopia's continued war mongering, provocative acts and the international communities silence is also the main reason Eritrea's youth are forced to do national service longer than what was originally planned.
The silence of the major powers of the world is tantamount to encouraging Ethiopia to miscalculate and start another war. As if the 30 year long war between Eritrea and Ethiopia is not enough, and as if the over 135, 000 Ethiopian and 20, 000 Eritrean lives that were lost during the 1998-2000 war do not matter, the UN Security Council, led by the Obama Administration is neglecting its main duty that of working for peace and security of our world.
The Eritrean cyclists that includes a 14-year old young lady from the UK, and Septuagenarians are calling for Truth to be told about Ethiopia's behavior, for peace to be given a chance by implementing final and binding decisions, and for Justice to reign supreme in the UN halls. To this end the CT4TPJE cyclists are calling for an end to Ethiopia's occupation of sovereign Eritrean territories, and the lifting of the illegal sanctions imposed on Eritrea. These sanctions were designed and pushed by the US thinking it would give Ethiopia an upper hand in its conflict with Eritrea. It is an evil design that violates Eritrea's right to self-defense. To give peace a chance and to bring stability to the region these sanctions need to be immediately lifted.
